The LaBarque watershed has a great variety of terrestrial natural communities, including small sandstone glades, acid seeps, forested fens and many kinds of woodland. Several neotropical migratory bird species depend on this large forest for breeding habitat. The watershed is a refuge for rare and habitat-specific plants, including some species of conservation concern. A riparian community buffers LaBarque Creek, and its clear waters indicate its watershed's integrity. At least 42 species of fish live in the creek. This diversity is almost three times greater than that of any other Meramec River tributary below LaBarque, and LaBarque may soon be considered an "Outstanding State Resource Water."
