A successful hunting trip involves planning, scouting and patience. Missouri offers a variety of hunting opportunities to hone your skills.

If you plan to hunt with a firearm, you will need to complete a hunter education course before you can buy a permit. If you plan to bow hunt, MDC offers optional bow hunter education.

Archery and bow hunting continue to grow in popularity! During this beginner’s archery class, we will teach and practice the basics and help you perfect your stance to shoot more consistently and accurately. All equipment is provided.

This session will focus on other methods of cooking fish. We will discuss smoking, canning, pickling, and salting to name a few.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free clinic for women interested in learning about firearms for hunting, and target shooting on Sunday, June 12, at the Pigeon Hill Conservation Area south of St. Joseph.

Participants will meet at MDC’s shop building on the area from 9:30 to 11 a.m. for a classroom session. A one-hour lunch break will follow, participants are on their own for lunch. The clinic will resume from noon to 5 p.m. at the shooting range at the Pigeon Hill Conservation Area south of St. Joseph. Participants will get to target shoot with firearms with assistance from instructors.

This clinic will teach basic firearms handling and safety skills, said Cpl. Parker Rice, conservation agent in Buchanan County. A variety of firearms and their uses will be discussed and available for shooting at the range including rifles, pistols, and shotguns. MDC staff will provide firearms, ammunition. But participants are also encouraged to bring their own firearms and ammunition.

Deer hunting is challenging and rewarding at the same time. It’s not just about getting dressed up in camouflage and climbing in a deer stand or ground blind. It starts long before opening day in November. This class will start at the beginning. In this class, we will discuss rifle/ammo selection, dressing for the hunt, methods of hunting, scouting, animal identification, sighting in your rifle, and more. This is not a shooting class.

FREE SHOOTING! The Lake City Range is happy to open our doors to the public with a FREE day of shooting in celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day! Everyone is welcome! Come hone your skills on the trap or skeet fields, archery fields, or on the rifle or pistol ranges. All shooters must provide their own firearm and ammunition. We'll see you on the range!
