Explore Paddy Creek Wilderness with a naturalist. Meet at the Nature Center and carpool. Bring a sack lunch and water and wear comfortable hiking shoes. Hike is five miles and rated moderate in difficultly. Ages 18-adult.

Join us this summer for a free guided tour of Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery. Tours are conducted Tuesday-Friday at 10 am, 11 am, 1 pm & 2 pm from May 31st through September 2.

No reservations required. Meet at the Conservation Center. Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery is open 9 am-5 pm Tuesday-Saturday.

Let’s meet at Lake Springfield Boathouse for a few hours of fun on the water. Learn kayaking techniques, then put them to the test on the lake. We will paddle 2-4 miles, looking for wildlife along the way. Please bring a water bottle. All equipment, snacks, drinking water, life jackets, and sunscreen will be provided. Ages 12-17.

Want to celebrate Missouri's most magical insect? Come to Fireflies at Farmer's Park! Bring your family and make a firefly craft, play firefly games, and learn why fireflies blink. Stop by the garden area of Farmer's Park anytime between 5:30 pm and 9:30 pm for this event. Come closer to 9 pm if you hope to catch fireflies. Springfield Nature Center staff and volunteers will be around to offer fun facts and answer questions. Check out the live band, food, and vendors at the Farmer's Park courtyard, too. All ages.

Join us to discover the joys of shotgun shooting. We will discuss shotgun nomenclature, stance, dominant eye, mounting, moving the shotgun, and much more. We will provide 20-gauge shotguns and ammunition for those who do not have one. If you plan to use your own, bring a minimum of 50 rounds of new ammunition for your firearm. Make sure all firearms are unloaded before arriving at the range. There should be no live ammunition, or uncased firearms inside the classroom. Please leave all firearms in the vehicle until the class is dismissed including all concealed carry handguns and magazines.

Register your family and meet us at the east parking lot at Busiek Conservation Area to hike and explore with our naturalists. We will explore the forest and creek so come prepared for hiking and to get wet. Bring water, sunscreen, insect repellent, a towel, a hat, and an extra pair of shoes you can wear in the water (no flip-flops or crocs). Ages 8-adult. Ages 8-17 must be accompanied by a participating adult. Please register the entire family so we can get an accurate count.

Partnership with the Joplin Public Library Teen department, to Celebrate Summer by discovering the basics of fishing. Learn the basics of fishing to get any beginner angler catching fish. You will learn about the basic gear and how to use it as well as fish identification, strategies, rules, and regulations. Then we will wet a line and do some catch and release fishing at the education pond. Fishing equipment will be provided, but you may bring your own. All participants 16 years of age and older must have a valid Missouri fishing license and all participants 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

A cool, clear Missouri stream or creek is a great place to spend a warm summer day. Each stream is full of life; some can be seen swimming by while others stay hidden. Join us as we dive below the water’s surface and discover what aquatic creatures are hidden in our creeks and what role they play. Recommended for ages 5 and above.

Location: Chesapeake Fish Hatchery

Lesson 1: Equipment, Casting and Proper Fish Handling combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families basic fishing techniques and skills. Participants will learn how to properly and safely cast a spincast fishing rod, parts of a fishing rod, how to fasten basic fishing tackle and how to properly handle and release a fish.

Lesson 2: How to Tie a Knot and Bait a Hook combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families intermediate fishing techniques and skills. Participants will learn to tie an improved clinch knot and how to properly secure bait on hooks.

Fishing equipment, instructors/coaches and bait/lures will be provided.

Ages 7 and above. All children ages 7-15 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Participants DO NOT need a fishing permit to fish during this program.

Each participant will need to register for this program individually on the Missouri Department of Conservation Discover Fishing website. Email instructor for assistance with registering for this program.
