Kansas City, Mo. – Gardening season is getting closer, and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering a free NatureScaping program from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, at the Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs. The program will explore using native wildflowers and grasses in landscape plantings. A native plant sale will also be offered.

A special guest speaker will be Lenora Larson, a butterfly expert and native plant enthusiast. Native plants benefit pollinators such as butterflies and other insects far more than nonnative plants. MDC staff will offer educational presentations on how native plants can be successfully started and used in plantings. They will demonstrate how to get natives started from seeds in planters for transplanting in spring. Vendors will be on hand to sell native plant seedlings for transplanting.

This program is open to participants ages 18 and older. COVID-19 safety precautions will be followed. Registration is required. To register, visit https://short.mdc.mo.gov/4Zc.
